- What is an ePTFE acoustic membrane?
An ePTFE acoustic membrane is a microporous component placed over a microphone or speaker opening to help block water and particles while allowing sound to pass.
- How do pressure vents help reduce condensation risk?
A protective vent provides a controlled gas and vapor path that reduces pressure differences and supports moisture-vapor diffusion, helping lower—but not eliminate—the conditions that cause condensation.
- What is the difference between an acoustic vent and a protective vent?
An acoustic vent is optimized for sound transmission at microphone or speaker openings; a protective vent is optimized for airflow and pressure equalization in a sealed enclosure.
- How should vent airflow be selected for an enclosure?
Select airflow from enclosure free volume, expected temperature or altitude change, allowable pressure difference, change rate and the membrane's airflow at a stated test pressure.
- Does an IP-rated membrane guarantee the finished device's IP rating?
No. Membrane or converted-part test results do not by themselves guarantee the IP rating of the finished device; the complete product must be tested in its final construction.
- When should an adhesive vent or a threaded vent be used?
Use an adhesive vent where space, low profile and automated assembly are priorities; consider a threaded vent where the enclosure has a suitable port and needs a mechanically retained, replaceable vent structure.
- What information is required for membrane or vent selection?
Provide the device function, opening and available area, target ingress protection, acoustic or airflow target, environment, housing material, assembly method and project stage.
- How do waterproof acoustic membranes affect sound?
A waterproof acoustic membrane adds acoustic impedance to the sound path, so its effect depends on membrane construction, active area, adhesive opening, cavity geometry and the microphone or speaker. The finished assembly must be measured across the required frequency range.
- Where should a protective vent be placed on an enclosure?
Place a protective vent where it has a clear internal and external airflow path, is protected from standing water and mechanical damage, and can be assembled and inspected consistently. Final placement must be validated in the complete enclosure.
- How should an adhesive vent be installed?
Install an adhesive vent on a clean, dry and compatible flat surface; align the active area with the opening, avoid touching or damaging the membrane, apply controlled pressure to the adhesive ring and allow the specified dwell time before validation.
