Woven acoustic mesh and ePTFE acoustic membrane are not interchangeable

Woven acoustic mesh is commonly used for particle screening, mechanical protection, appearance and acoustic tuning. A microporous ePTFE acoustic membrane is used when the sound path also needs a controlled barrier against liquid water, sweat or fine contaminants.

Mesh has visible openings defined by yarn, weave and open area. Expanded ePTFE has a much finer, tortuous microporous structure. Even when two materials show similar airflow, differences in mass, resistance, thickness and pore distribution can produce different insertion loss and frequency response.

The correct choice depends on the complete device. Compare candidates with the same active area, adhesive opening, fixture and sound channel, then validate sensitivity, output, frequency response, distortion and waterproof performance after assembly.

Some products use both: an outer mesh for impact, appearance or debris control and an inner ePTFE membrane for liquid-water protection. Every added layer changes resistance, mass, cavity depth and tolerance, so the full stack must be treated as one acoustic component.
