Pressure equalization is not a safety-valve claim
Heating and cooling can create pressure differences in a closed lid assembly. Define free gas volume, the fastest realistic pressure event, the allowable differential and the required equalization time. A breathable membrane is not automatically a safety relief valve and must not be presented as a way to make an unsafe sealed hot-liquid container safe. Do not rely on uncontrolled assembly leakage as the vent path.
Check real beverages, wetting and blocked-flow conditions
Waterproof performance measured with clean water does not establish suitability for coffee, milk, oils, detergents or every beverage. Residues and low-surface-tension liquids may wet or obstruct a candidate material. Evaluate the intended liquids, hot-fill or cooling cycle, inversion, shaking, repeated cleaning and a blocked or wetted vent. These are design inputs for testing, not promises of spill-proof performance.
Integrate the membrane, adhesive and drainage
Provide a continuous compatible bonding surface, protect the active area from ribs and adhesive squeeze-out, and consider a drainable position rather than a persistent liquid pool. Validate gas flow, liquid ingress and bond integrity after real assembly and aging. Food-contact suitability requires documentation for the intended use; it cannot be inferred from ePTFE as a material name. Do not claim a complete lid is food-safe or dishwasher-safe without supporting evidence.
What we need to evaluate
- Lid section drawing, vent position, gas volume and available active area
- Intended beverage, temperatures, pressure event and exposure duration
- Substrate, adhesive area, assembly process and cleaning method
- Acceptance criteria for leakage, flow, blocked-vent behavior and relevant compliance documents
Engineering FAQ
Is a cup lid vent membrane the same as a pressure relief valve?
No. A membrane offers a gas-permeable path; a safety valve has separately defined relief behavior. Suitability and failure response must be assessed for the complete lid.
Can the membrane stop leaks with every drink?
No universal claim is appropriate. Liquid chemistry, wetting, contamination, orientation, temperature and pressure influence performance. Test the actual beverages and use cycle.
Does ePTFE mean the lid is approved for food contact?
No. Food-contact suitability requires evidence for the intended use. The complete membrane, support, adhesive and lid construction need the appropriate review.
